MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A University of Memphis student was fatally shot on campus and classes were canceled Monday, police said.”We found him with a bullet wound to the body and the ambulance took him to the hospital where he was pronounced [dead],” said Roger Prewitt, a Memphis Police inspector.WMC-TV and WVLT identified the victim as Memphis defensive lineman Taylor Bradford, a junior transfer from Samford University. Branshaw on the brink in Mississippi 

David Branshaw is on the verge of landing a maiden PGA Tour title after opening up a two-shot lead after the third round of the Viking Classic on Saturday.

Overnight leader Branshaw signed for a three-under-par 69 to extend his lead over the field and move onto 13-under overall, with Bill Haas his nearest challenger.

Branshaw, 190th on the tour money list, has missed the cut in 17 of 24 starts and has failed to secure a top-ten finish this season, but claimed 13th place at Turning Stone last week.

Tearful Bettini wins in Germany

Italy’s Paolo Bettini, the man local organisers tried to ban for not signing an anti-doping pledge, successfully defended his elite men’s road race title at the World Championships in Stuttgart.

Bettini won a last-gasp sprint against four other riders to finish the 267.4km race in six hours 44 minutes 43 seconds and retain his rainbow jersey.

The Russian Alexandr Kolobnev was second, with Germany’s Stefan Schumacher third.

Gasquet wins on Mumbai hardcourt

Richard Gasquet completed a 6-3 6-4 victory over number eight seed Olivier Rochus on Sunday to win the Kingfisher Airlines Open in Mumbai.

In capturing his first hardcourt title, the top-seeded Frenchman did not lose a set and dropped only 20 games en route to his fifth career singles crown.

It was also Gasquet’s first title since winning in Lyon last October.

Ivanovic claims third title this year

Ana Ivanovic celebrated her qualification for the Sony Ericsson Championships with victory in the final of the Fortis Championships in Luxembourg today.

Just one day after becoming the fourth player to qualify for the season-ending event in Spain in November, the second-seeded Serbian rallied for a 3-6 6-4 6-4 victory over fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova.

It was the third title of the year and fifth of her career for Ivanovic, who won at Berlin and Los Angeles.
